Our recruitment process explained
Do you see yourself working in a diverse and multicultural environment, making your unique contribution to a better Europe and a better world? If so, we are looking for you!
Take a look at how our selection process works before submitting your application.
Eligibility criteria
We are an equal opportunities employer, who believes that diversity is good for our people and our business. We encourage all suitably qualified and eligible candidates to apply regardless of their gender identity/expression, age, racial, ethnic and cultural background, religion and beliefs, sexual orientation/identity, disability or neurodiversity.
We have a strong, robust, meritocratic process. There are some eligibility criteria that all applicants should meet.
Look for vacancies
Before applying, you will be asked to create an account, which you can use for all future job applications. You can also sign up to receive e-mail alerts whenever we post new jobs that might be of interest to you.
If you would like to work with us, but none of the available vacancies fit your profile, don’t lose heart. Consult the website on a regular basis, or sign up to the e-mail alerts, and apply again when you see a role matching your experience and skills. We do not accept spontaneous applications.

Finally, if you require any reasonable adjustments at the application stage, or later in the recruitment process, please send an e-mail to disability@eib.org.
Screening: assessment and digital interview
For most vacancies, there will be a pre-recorded video/digital interview or a phone interview. This is typically job-specific and is an opportunity to present yourself. As with a face-to-face interview, the assessment of the video interview is relative to other applicants.
For some roles, we might also ask you to complete a technical test for a more in-depth assessment of your competency and/or knowledge of certain job-related tasks.
For Managerial roles only, if you are successful in the previous stages, we will invite you to complete a personality questionnaire, which forms part of a comprehensive external Assessment Centre, designed to provide a robust and independent evaluation of your managerial and behavioural competencies. The results of this Assessment Centre are summarised in a report, which remains valid for one year.
Finally, if you require any reasonable adjustments at the application stage, or later in the recruitment process, please send an e-mail to disability@eib.org.
Interview and assessment
If you are successful in the previous stages, we will invite you for a face-to-face interview programme.
For most vacancies, you will (after completion of a personality questionnaire), have an interview with your future manager and members of your future team, and with HR. If you are a candidate for a Managerial post, you will instead be interviewed by a panel comprising managers of at least the same level as the vacant post, from across the Bank and including a senior representative from HR.
Interviews will normally take place face-to-face at our premises, but may be conducted by video conference.
We use online reasoning and personality tests. These tests provide us insights into your working preferences, your reasoning processes as well as your personality. The results are valid for one year and are made available to hiring managers and selection panel members for their consideration. We therefore recommend that you practice this type of assessment before taking the tests.
Your interview programme, in most cases, will also comprise a professional and/or technical test which aims to further assess your competency and knowledge on certain job-related subjects. The test may be marked on an anonymous basis or be discussed during the panel interview.
We cover the majority of your travel costs up-front and offer a daily allowance to help with ad-hoc expenses incurred on the day.
Once all the interviews are completed, the panel debriefs to assess the test results and performance at the interview, and recommends the candidates who best meets our requirements and best complements the existing team.
A hiring recommendation is sent to the appropriate hiring authority for decision and approval, and, if successful, we will send you a conditional offer.
If you need any reasonable adjustments during the on-boarding process, please send an email to disability@eib.org.
Offer and pre-employment screening
Our offers are conditional on:
1) a confirmation of medical aptitude/fitness for work, which is typically assessed through the completion of a strictly confidential questionnaire, accessible only by our medical service.
2) the satisfactory completion of a pre-employment screening.
Before we launch the pre-employment screening, you will be requested to fill out a self-declaration. If the self-declaration is in order, you will receive a contract, with a conditional clause, subject to the successful completion of pre-employment screening managed by the external provider. You are advised not to resign from your current employer before you have received the conditional employment contract.
At this time, you will also be granted access to our newcomers’ portal where you will find plenty of information about your relocation to Luxembourg and the administrative steps you will be asked to complete prior to your first day.
Indefinite contracts are subject to a successful probation period of 9 months. Probation periods for fixed-term contracts may vary from 3 to 6 months.
Your first day!
We are happy you made it!
During your first day, you will have the opportunity to meet other new starters from across the organisation at the initial induction. You will also be welcomed by your new colleagues and see your office for the first time.
During your first year with us, you will follow on-boarding and training sessions to make sure you integrate well within the EIB family.
If you need any reasonable adjustments during the on-boarding process, please send an email to disability@eib.org.
And if your application was not successful?
All candidates, whether successful or not, are informed of the outcome of the selection process.
This can sometimes take time, but we are working on making our processes faster. Thank you in advance for your patience.
Please note, however, that due to the volume of applications we receive, we are not able to provide specific and personalised feedback to applicants who are not called for interviews.
Finally, we do try to keep track of interesting CVs and strong applicants who were interviewed but not successful for a particular role. To ensure that we don’t miss any suitable opportunities for you, we encourage you to apply directly online to subsequent vacancies that are of interest.
